> Working Towards Safer Homes - fire service to check for working smoke alarms
During the week of November 21-27, the North Frontenac Fire Department will be conducting a door-to-door check of smoke alarms in North Frontenac in the areas of Ardoch, Ompah, Plevna, and Snow Road.
The North Frontenac Fire Department will be checking to ensure there are working smoke alarms on every story, as well as outside all sleeping areas. "Most fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep, so that is why it is so important for everyone to have working smoke alarms and know what to do when they sound," said Eric Korhonen, Fire Prevention Officer . "Working smoke alarms will give you the early warning you need for everyone to get out safely." There is no smoke alarm warning in approximately 50 percent of all fatal fires in Ontario.
"We certainly don't want or expect to be handing out tickets as a result of this program," said Eric Korhonen, Fire Prevention Officer. "The North Frontenac Fire Department will work with homeowners to make sure they have the correct number of smoke alarms for their home and that they are working". "However we do have the power to prosecute if people refuse to comply with the law. We know that smoke alarms save lives and we will do whatever is necessary to make sure everyone is adequately protected," continued Eric Korhonen, Fire Prevention Officer.
Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements can result in a ticket for $235 or a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations.
For additional information contact Eric Korhonen, Fire Prevention Officer North Frontenac Fire Department at 613-479-0072 or email [email protected]

> County of Frontenac and City of Kingston meetings for 'Municipal Housing Strategy'
Dear Community Member:
As you may know, the City of Kingston and County of Frontenac have commissioned the preparation of a comprehensive Municipal Housing Strategy. The overall purpose of the Strategy is to identify the key housing challenges facing residents and to identify approaches to address these needs. SHS Consulting, in association with Re/Fact Consulting, has been retained to assist in developing this strategy.
Earlier this fall, two consultation sessions were held to gather community perspectives on housing needs and issues. We are now moving forward into the strategy development process and again are seeking community input. We will be holding two consultation sessions with stakeholders and interested community members in both the urban and rural areas:
Thursday, Nov. 18th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
at Oso Community Hall,
1107 Garrett Street, Sharbot Lake, ON
- OR -
Thursday, Nov. 18th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour (Sail Room),
53 Yonge Street, Kingston, ON
You are invited to attend one of these consultation sessions to hear a presentation about findings from Phase 1 of the study and to discuss options and opportunities for addressing housing challenges that urban and rural communities are facing. Results from these consultation sessions will be added to other stakeholder input and will help provide important input to Phase Two of the study.
If you are not able to attend either of these sessions, please forward this invitation to other senior staff or board members in your organization that may have a broad overview and opinions about housing strategies and solutions in Kingston and the surrounding area.
Please RSVP your attendance to Karen Hamilton at [email protected]. The favour of your reply is requested by November 10th.
Should you have any questions regarding the consultation sessions or the broader study, please do not hesitate to contact either:

> Aquatic Invasive Species Program
(Attention Lake Residents!)
Attention all lake residents of the Township of North Frontenac! The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and Mississippi Valley Conservation are seeking your assistance in sampling for aquatic invasive species in the Mississippi Valley watershed. You are invited to join in our efforts against the spread of invasive species, such as zebra mussels, spiny water flea and rusty crayfish - three of the most prevalent invaders within our watershed.
There are a number of ways in which you can become involved in sampling for these organisms. First of all, if you would like to play a hands-on role in keeping our lakes healthy, you are invited to accompany O.F.A.H. and M.V.C. employees to your lake, at which time we will assist you in collecting the sample. You may also choose to conduct your sampling independently using invasive species sampling kits that can be delivered to you upon request. This would be a fun and educational activity to share with young family members. Finally, if you are unable to participate but would like to have a lake near you sampled, let us know and O.F.A.H and M.V.C. employees will conduct sampling at the requested lake. Staff are also available to give informative presentations and to distribute educational materials at your lake.
If you have any questions or would like to get involved in the Invasive Species Program this summer, please do not hesitate to contact Alana Sargeant (this year's summer student representative of the Invasive Species Awareness Program in the Mississippi Valley Watershed) via email ([email protected]) or through the Mississippi Valley Conservation Head Office from Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm (613-259-2421). You can also refer to the invasive species official website at www.invadingspecies.com. Let's work together to Keep All Our Lakes Great!

> North Frontenac Council proclaims June as Seniors' Month 2010
"June is Seniors' Month, an opportunity for all Ontarians to recognize and value the contributions made by seniors every day
in communities across the province.
Seniors' Month is an annual celebratory tradition in which the contributions of seniors are acknowledged and honoured
throughout the province. Ontario's population aged 65 and over is projected to more than double from 1.8 million, or 13.7
per cent of the population in 2009 to 4.1 million, or 23.2 per cent, in 2036. The growth in seniors' share of the population
will accelerate after 2011 as baby boomers begin to turn age 65. Seniors' Month events include award ceremonies, recognition
events, socials and seniors' information fairs.
Ontario is one of the best places in the world to grow older. Ontarians across the province are encouraged to join in the
celebrations taking place in their local community to recognize and thank older Ontarians who have worked hard and continue
to contribute to the prosperity that we all enjoy today."
